MAPANAS, Northern Samar (April 25, 2024) — A momentous event unfolded against the stunning backdrop of Naputad Beach and Blue Lagoon as the Peace and Tourism Caravan, in conjunction with the 3rd Local Chief Executive Meeting, was successfully facilitated by the esteemed 74th Infantry (UNBEATABLE) Battalion in the Pacific towns of the 2nd District of Northern Samar.

Under the banner of “Pacifico Para Sa Turismo, Hindi Terorismo,” this remarkable gathering symbolized the region’s commitment to peace, unity, and sustainable tourism.

The activity began with a dynamic Peace rally and motorcade that reflected the spirit of solidarity and hope. In attendance were representatives from various sectors, including Congressman Harris Christopher Ongchuan, Local Chief Executives from the four municipalities (Mapanas, Palapag, Gamay, and Lapinig), representatives from academia, the tourism industry, the security sector, provincial and local authorities, Liga ng mga Barangay, the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation, and former rebels, who reaffirmed their commitment to peace and tourism development.

Signing the Peace/Tourism covenant was one of the highlights of the event. The symbolic action demonstrated the shared vision of the attendees in promoting peace and harnessing tourism’s potential as a catalyst for economic growth. The covenant represents the unwavering commitment of the stakeholders to work together and create an environment conducive to sustainable tourism and inclusive development.

As a result of the significant weakening of the New People’s Army (NPA) in the region, the Pacific towns of the 2nd District of Northern Samar have undergone a remarkable transformation.

Due to this newfound peace and stability, the tourism industry has flourished in Mapanas, Palapag, Gamay, and Lapinig, fueling economic development. A wide range of opportunities for economic growth, employment, and prosperity have been created by tourism in the local communities.

In addition to providing a platform for constructive dialogue and collaboration among local leaders, the third Local Chief Executive Meeting also contributed to the strengthening of peace, security, and sustainable tourism initiatives in Pacific towns. Additionally, it provides valuable opportunities for these leaders to exchange ideas, share best practices, and collaborate on projects that would benefit the entire region. As a result of the facilitation of the 74th Infantry (UNBEATABLE) Battalion, the military demonstrated its critical role in supporting community development and fostering a climate of peace and stability.

As the Pacific towns of the 2nd District of Northern Samar continue to unite under the banner of peace and tourism, they serve as an inspiration for other communities. Collective action and a shared vision have enabled them to achieve progress and prosperity together, ensuring a brighter future for future generations. (With reports and photos from the 74IB)
