SAN JOSE DE BUAN, Philippines — In a significant step toward peace and reintegration, twenty-three (23) former members of the New People’s Army (NPA) recently submitted their applications for amnesty at an orientation event organized by the National Amnesty Commission (NAC) of Samar.

A total of 23 former rebels submitted applications for amnesty at the National Amnesty Commission or NAC recently.

The event, led by Ms. Jazmine Odyssa B. Lutao, PDO III of the Local Amnesty Board, took place at the headquarters of the 87th Infantry Battalion, Poblacion 2, San Jose de Buan, Samar.

The amnesty orientation and initial acceptance ceremony marked a pivotal moment for the former rebels as they embarked on a new chapter in their lives, choosing to return to the government’s fold. The gathering was not merely formal; it was a powerful demonstration of solidarity and hope for the future.

Among those present were key local figures such as Ms. Shalyn D. Lim-ang, Municipal Local Government Operations Officer (MLGOO) of San Jose de Buan, and Hon. Salve N. Dacles, Punong Barangay of Poblacion 2, San Jose de Buan, Samar.

Representatives from the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) also attended, showing their unwavering support for the participants and emphasizing the community’s collective commitment to their reintegration.

Ms. Lutao guided the participants through the program’s requirements with compassion and clarity, outlining how it would address their pending legal cases and offer them a genuine opportunity to rebuild their lives. Her words resonated deeply, providing both vital information and a sense of hope.

The most moving moment of the event came when the former rebels stood to take their oath of allegiance. The solemn act, filled with emotion, symbolized their commitment to reintegration, accountability, and the pursuit of a peaceful future. It was a powerful reminder of the transformative power of second chances and the resilience of the human spirit.

The ceremony concluded with an open forum, allowing the participants to ask questions and voice their concerns. This open dialogue fostered trust, transparency, and a deeper understanding of the journey ahead.

This orientation was more than just a formal program—it was a crucial step toward healing and rebuilding lives. It embodied the collective hope for a peaceful future, where former adversaries work together to create a stronger, more harmonious community. | PR via The Samar Chronicle
