AS A HIKER and nature enthusiast, I am constantly drawn to the untouched beauty of the great outdoors, seeking refuge from the chaos of urban life. My recent trek to Mount Danglay in Samar’s Basey town was a transformative experience that not only tested my physical abilities but also touched my soul with a profound love story that is deeply woven into the mountain’s legend.

Standing proudly at 355 meters above sea level, Mount Danglay is renowned for its rugged terrain and lush rainforests, offering a challenging yet rewarding experience for adventurers. This mountain has earned the reputation of being a “training ground” for novice hikers, attracting enthusiasts eager to test their skills after completing the Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC) conducted by the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines, Inc. (MFPI).

Joined by fellow hikers from Tacloban City, along with Cambayan Mountain Guides and members of the Samar Mountaineering and Outdoor Club, Inc. (SAMOC), our journey to Mount Danglay was filled with excitement and camaraderie. Despite the occasional rain making our trek slippery, we were determined to conquer the mountain.

Reaching the summit was the pinnacle of our adventure, offering a breathtaking view of the iconic San Juanico Bridge, also known as the “Love Bridge.” Witnessing the sunset from the mountain peak was a magical moment that left an indelible mark on our hearts.

The trek itself, with its challenging “Kiss the Knee” segment, tested our endurance and skills acquired from our BMC training. This training not only equipped us with essential navigation skills but also instilled in us the principles of Leave No Trace (LNT), ensuring our exploration was responsible and sustainable.

Beyond the physical challenges, Mount Danglay offered moments of introspection and clarity. Immersed in nature, we felt a deep connection with the mountain and its surroundings, experiencing a sense of peace and tranquility.

Central to Mount Danglay’s allure is its rich local legend, the tragic love story of “Dang and Mulay.” This folklore, passed down through generations, added a mystical dimension to our journey, reminding us of the enduring power of love and the mountain’s cultural significance.

Our experience was further enriched by SAMOC’s commitment to community outreach in the area. Their efforts to support the local community underscored the importance of preserving the natural wonders that host these adventures.

As we descended from Mount Danglay, we carried with us not just memories of breathtaking vistas but also a deep appreciation for nature’s beauty. Through our environmental conservation efforts, we hope to preserve Mount Danglay’s pristine environment for future generations to enjoy.

My journey to Mount Danglay, indeed, was a profound experience that strengthened my bond with nature and deepened my understanding of the importance of environmental conservation. It was a journey of love, adventure, and a renewed sense of responsibility towards our natural world.
